He was born in humble beginnings, on a farm in Shelby County OH. He came to Elkhart IN in 1843 at the age of 19 and became a merchant, with interests in milling and manufacturing. From this he rose to become one of Elkhart's most prominent and wealthy citizens and in 1868, he became the President of the First National Bank of Elkhart. He married Sarah Frances Beardsley in July 1850 and there were six children born to this union: daughters Elizabeth, Hallie E., Carrie, and Francis B Davenport, and two sons who were stillborn or died in infancy. In 1878, he was elected on the Republican ticket as an Indiana State Senator.
