Sarah was born in 1777 in North Carolina. She is the daughter of William McRee and Mary Polly White of Mecklenburg (now Cabarras) County, North Carolina.

On August 16, 1797, Sarah McRee married William Russell in Cabarrus County, North Carolina. At the time of their marriage, William was 24 and Sarah was 20. William passed away in Cabarrus County, North Carolina after 18 months of marriage. At the time of William's death, Sarah was about two months pregnant with their only child Dr Wiiliam James Russell, who was named after his father, William, and his paternal grandfather, James.

Sarah remarried Major John Alexander, a Revolutionary War Veteran, on March 19, 1803, in Cabarrus County, North Carolina. At the time of their marriage, Sarah was 26 and John was 47. John was previously married to Elizabeth Williamson, who died in 1797. John had several children from his previous marriage, many of whom were adults by the time he and Sarah married. By 1808, Sarah and John had moved to Spartanburg, South Carolina, where they had four children:
Jane Alexander, birth date about 1804.
John Newton Alexander, born June 18, 1808.
Samuel Franklin Alexander, born about 1810.
David Harvey Alexander, born about 1813.

By the mid-1820s, Sarah, John, and several of their children had moved to Gwinnett County, Georgia. On May 9, 1830, John died and was buried in Fairview Presbyterian Church Cemetery. After John's death, Sarah moved in with her son, David Harvey Alexan- der, and his family in Gwinnett County.

Sarah passed away on November 22, 1853, in Lawrenceville, Gwinnett County, Georgia. She was 76. She was buried in Fairview Presbyterian Church Cemetery.
