From Belmont Abbey Book of the Dead. "FATHER MATTHEW GRAZ, O.S.B was a Pennsylvania native, born there in 1876. He was raised in the city of Allegheny. In 1896 Graz entered the Benedictine novitiate as a candidate for Belmont Abbey. He professed vows the next year. In 1900 he made his solemn profession and was ordained priest by Abbot-Bishop Leo Haid. In 1908, Father Matthew was joined in North Carolina by his young brother, Richard, who also went on to be professor and ordained at Belmont. Both brothers persevered unto death. Seldom stationed at the abbey, Father Matthew spent most of his monastic life in Belmont's dependencies, where he taught various subjects, especially classical languages, English, and public speaking. Graz spent time at Belmont's priories in Bristow (1900-1903), Savannah (1905-1918), and Richmond (1923-1937). Pastoral ministry was exercised in hospital chaplaincies and at the Concord parish, Saint James (1904-1906). The focus of Father Matthew's devotion was the Real Presence. He spent long, profitable hours kneeling in prayer and adoration before the Sacrament. In the early 1920's, when he was chaplain to the students of Belmont Abbey College, he often took the boys with him to chapel, to spend time before the tabernacle. For Father Matthew, these journeys could serve as either reward or punishment. Ideally, he believed, time before the Lord should be seen as a reward for good behavior, but it could also be useful in providing recalcitrant boys with a suitable time and setting for reflection upon their misconduct. Father Matthew died on 15 January 1942. Responses to his passing included appreciative reflections and tributes from alumni of each of the schools where he had taught."
