Shelby was a wonderful and amazingly talented young woman. She sang, played piano, and wrote all of her own music. She released her debut album "From In The Shadows" in 1999, followed by a small tour. She was only 15 years old at that point. She was also a humble woman, having once said "I didn't know what I was doing was special or good. It's just something that I did ." Shelby struggled with bulimia nervous, a dysphoric eating disorder. Complication from this are ultimately was took her life. Her mother continued to advocate, in her honor. It is a tragedy that this amazing young woman would never see the effect that she would have on her family, friends, and fans. The world lost a beautiful treasure when Shelby left it.

Shelby E. Starner, 19, of Bartonsville, died suddenly from natural causes on Sunday evening, June 22, at home.

Born on Jan. 3, 1984, in East Stroudsburg, she was the daughter of Ray J. and his wife, Susan (LaRose) Starner of Stroudsburg, and Katherine (Haas) Benn and her husband, Allen, of Bartonsville. She was a resident of Monroe County all of her life.

She was an independent study student planning to attend the University of Pittsburgh in August 2003. She was a writer and musician, and her music has touched many people.

Shelby was a creative, intelligent and loving person.

In addition to her parents and step-parents, she is survived by one sister, one stepbrother, maternal grandparents, Clyde and Catherine Eilenberger of Stroudsburg; and paternal grandfather, Kenneth E. Starner of Stroudsburg. She was preceded in death by her paternal grandmother, Charlotte Starner who died in 1999.
