On December 21, 1898 he married Alta Charlotte Scrivner, daughter of James and Lenora (Scott) Scrivner. Shortly after their marriage the Slusses moved to a homestead on Corral Creek, near Sundance, Wyoming in Crook County, Wyoming. There Ira owned and operated a sawmill for many years. This mill provided much needed lumber for the surrounding area.
The first three of their six children were born there. The younger three were born at Sundance. Creta Lenore, born July 22, 1900; Ellis Ira, born August 4, 1902, and Velda Pauline born January 17, 1905.
In about 1907 the Slusses purchased the Doctor Baker home on Cleveland Street in Sundance so that the older children could attend school. It was here the younger children were born. They were: George Clause, born June 30, 1908; Esther Aileen, born September 26, 1912; and James Eugene, born December 1914.
Ira continued operating the sawmill for some time and then went into the cattle business on a ranch west of Sundance, where he remained for some time. About 1911 or 1912 Ira served a term as town marshal of Sundance. He died after a long illness on May 13, 1921. He is buried at Mount Moriah Cemetery. (from "Pioneers of Crook County)
