MARGEURITE ELAINE SCOGGINS
Jan. 11, 1914 -- March 4, 2005
Margeurite Elaine (Kulow) Scoggins, 91, 1948 S. Courtland Ave., died 8:40 p.m. Friday, March 4, 2005, at Howard Regional Health System, Kokomo. She was born Jan. 11, 1914, in Kokomo. Her parents were James and Lula Ferris Kulow. As a young girl, Marge worked at her parents' grocery store, Kulow's Grocery, located at Morgan and Market streets in Kokomo. Marge met her future husband, Henry Clayborn Scoggins, on a blind date. Marge and Henry married in 1936 in Kokomo. They had two children, Richard Clayborn and Janice Kay. She went to work for Kokomo Center Schools in cafeteria services. Marge worked in the cafeterias of several Kokomo elementary schools for nearly 20 years. When her granddaughters and their friends passed through the serving line as elementary students, Marge would often produce the best pieces of cake that she had secretly hidden beneath the counter for her favorite girls.
Marge's husband, Henry, died in 1972 at the age of 63. She never remarried. Marge went on to work at the Cheer Guild Gift Shop at St. Joseph Hospital in Kokomo. She worked in the gift shop for 30 years. Marge was known by the hospital staff and other regular visitors for her warm greeting and her thoughtful attention. She was active with the gift shop until just last year at the age of 90. Marge and her family celebrated her 90th birthday with hospital and gift shop
staff at St. Joe.
Marge was preceded in death by two brothers, Leon and Ralph; and one sister, Carmen. She is survived by one brother, James, California; her two children, Richard and his wife, June, Kokomo, and Jan and her husband, Tim Hanslien Calgary, Alberta Canada. Marge also is survived by four grandchildren, Debbie Scoggins, Elkhart, Tammy and her husband, Jeff Hodges, Russiaville, Sherri and her husband, John Reiner, Elkhart, and Todd Scoggins and his
wife, Heather, Indianapolis; and five great-grandchildren, Michelle Reiner, Brad Hodges, Kelly Hodges, Michael Reiner and Savanna Scoggins.
Marge's family will remember her gentle nature, thoughtful gifts and compliments, her beautiful sense of style and dress, her smile and quiet manner, her wit and good humor and her homemade chicken and noodles every Thanksgiving. Marge was a blessing to her family by way of her unconditional love and support for all of her children, her example of service to friends and community and her faith in her Lord Jesus Christ. She was a member of Grace United
Methodist Church for more than 50 years.
Services are 11 a.m. Tuesday at Shirley & Stout Funeral Home, Lincoln Road Chapel, 1315 W. Lincoln Road, with the Rev. Steve Beutler officiating.
Entombment will follow in Sunset Memory Gardens Mausoleum. Friends are invited to call from 4 to 8 p.m. Monday at the funeral home and one hour before the service Tuesday. Memorial contributions may be made to Grace United Methodist Church or St. Joseph Hospital Cheer Guild. Envelopes are available at the funeral home.
