Melvin (Mel) E. Tietjen, 84, passed away in his Mesa, AZ home on July 10, 2012. He was born in Monroe, UT November 15, 1927, the son of the "greatest parents in the world", H. Roland Tietjen and Genevieve Willardson.

He was preceded in death by his parents, two sisters, Bernell Simpson and Barbara Jacobs, two brothers Edward and Henry and his wife Dolores Christensen.

He will continued to be loved and missed by his wife Gail, her sons Darren, Don and Jamie, his four sons Mark (Marie), Robert (Kris), David (Lisa) and Larry (Denell). He was blessed with 15 grandchildren and 4 great-grandchildren.

Mel attended Brigham Young University and the University of Utah, where he graduated with a Bachelor's of Science Degree. He also served as a missionary in the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints, in the Northwestern States Mission.

During the Korean War he served as a Chaplain in the Air Force where he achieved the rank of Captain. He set his mark in the insurance industry, consistently achieving top honors. He also served as a bishop in the LDS Church and volunteered in several service organizations, including the Boy Scouts of America, the Valley of the Sun Kiwanis and the National Conference of Christians and Jews. He loved to travel, spend time on the beach, play tennis and listen to music. He read and studied constantly and became an avid historian.

Visitation will be Thursday, July 19, 2012 from 7-9 PM at Bunker's Garden Chapel, 33 N. Centennial Way, Mesa 85201.

Funeral services are Friday, July 20, 2012 at 10 AM preceded by a visitation at 9 AM at the LDS Church at 1911 N. 24th St., also in Mesa.
