The Chico Enterprise (Chico, California) 09 Sep 1939, Saturday Page 1: Veteran Employee of P.G.E., Dies Answering Phone Call. Walter Thomas Greenwalt, 64, veteran employee of the Pacific Gas & Electric company, passed away suddenly this morning while on duty as an operator at the Centerville Power House.

At 3:08 a.m. this morning, L.W. Brown, operator of the Chico substation made a routine telephone call to Centerville to ask Greenwalt to lower the voltage on the line. While they were engaged in conversation, Greenwalt ceased talking, leaving the receiver off the hook. When he did not return to the phone Brown, unable to get Centerville due to the phone being off the hook, called the district superintendent, Thomas Copeland and they decided that before they cold send a main from Chico the relief operator would come on duty.

Sidney Youngstron, the relief man found Greenwalt in the telephone booth where he had slumped from a heart attack. Dr. P.L. Hamilton, of Chico, was summoned and pronounced him dead.

Greenwalt was a native of San Jose, and in 1898 went to Centerville, at which time the construction of the powerhouse was being made. He began work there at that time and has been employed by the P.G. & E., Co., ever since.

He was a member of the P.S.E.A.

Greenwalt was a brother-in-law to the late Leonard T. Almstead [interred at Centerville Cem] who passed away just two weeks ago. He was also employed by the P.G. & E., company.

Funeral arrangements will be announced later by the Nugent funeral service, successor to Bicknell’s.
