Black was the first conductor to make the Sacramento-Chico run on the then new Sacramento Northern Railroad and was the oldest conductor from the point of service on the system.
He was prominent in fraternal and lodge circles, having been a member of Golden West Lodge No. 332, I.O.O.F.; Oriental Encampment and Templar Rebecca Lodge No. 19 of San Francisco; Occidental Lodge No. 22, F.&A.M.; Ben Ali Shrine of Sacramento; Chico Commandery, Knights Templar; Chico Chapter 42, R.A.M., and Josephine Chapter, O.E.S.
He is survived by his widow, Mary M. Black of Chico. Funeral arrangements are being completed at Westfall Funeral Home.
