Eldest child of William Nassau Vennard and Soffie Bertelsen Vennard. She married Hugh Augustus Short in 1915 in Wessington Springs, SD, where they lived for the rest of their days. In addition to raising a family, Alice served as Dean of Women at Wessington Springs College, where she also was the Latin instructor. Her biological children were Ruth Arta, Burton Douglas, Dudley Robert, and Mary Christabelle Short. Alice and Hugh Short also informally adopted Rosalie [Bjorklund].
