Terrible Accident At Webster Last Night
August Berg Met Death and J.B. Peden Badly Injured-Remains brought Home Today

J B Peden and August Berg both of Monessen, met an awful fate at the P & L.E. railroad crossing at Turkey Hollow near Webster last night. The men were returning from a drive to Webster and arrived at the crossing just as the train due here at 5:22 was approaching. They were coming down the road at a rapid pace and ran onto the track in front of the train, which was running at the rate of sixty miles an hour.
This is a blind crossing and there was no opportunity on the part of the train men or the driver of the vehicle for actions. Like a thunderbolt out of a clear sky, the engine struck the horse, buggy and occupants with a crash all at the same time and hurled them over an embankment The train was brought to a standstill and the train crew went to the assistance of the unfortunate victims.
Both men were found to be badly injured. Berg had been struck on the head so awful blow. He was bleeding profusely and his brains were oozing out. He was placed on a stretcher and put on the train, but died in about twenty minutes after the accident had happened, he (?) the train arrived at McKeesport. Peder was also injured about the head, but his injuries were confined to the scalp and aside from the sock is in fairly good condition. He has several ugly scalp wounds, but will recover. He was put on the train and taken to McKeesport hospital where he received medical attention, and will return to Monessen tomorrow morning..
The horse was severed in two and was horribly mangled, scarcely drawing a breath after the engine struck it. The buggy as smashed to kindling wood and was thrown over the bank into the stream. Berg was taken to the Pittsburgh morgue and kept in state until friends were notified and arrived to take charge of the remains.
The accident was a very sad one. The fate that befell the victims who lost his life seems almost too pitiful to relate. He was a young man, well spoken of all who knew him and many words of sympathy were spoken by those acquainted with the young man and families, with the ceremonies which (?) his (?). Mr. berg leaves a widow and one child. He was about, twenty years of age and is a brother-in-law of David Henderson of the Third ward.
