Married 2nd: Martha Louisa Montgomery Elder (widow of David Elder ) Date: 8 Sep 1830 , Shelby Co., Illinois Born: 7 Apr 1807 , Mecklenburg Co., North Carolina Died: 20 May 1888 , Logan, Utah . Alfred Bell had much sorrow where marriage was concerned. His first wife, Jane G. Haynie , died after only being married two years. His second attempt, Nancy Pierce , died five days prior to their wedding. His third wife brought much happiness into his life. He raised her children by her first husband. Martha and Alfred were baptized into the Church the 23 May 1839 . Alfred ran a ferry on the Mississippi River at Nauvoo and became good friends with the Prophet and Hyrum , and mourned at their deaths. When the mobs forced the saints from their homes, Alfred and his family of five loaded what they could into their wagon and left with the others. In the spring the family turned off the main road and went down into the state of Missouri in the vicinity of St. Joseph . They remained there while they tried to get an outfit together to cross the plains. By the spring of 1851 , the Bells started for the Valley. They were in Captain Horne 's Company. After their arrival, they went to Lehi where they settled. The Walker Indian War was giving problems to the saints. A fort was built for protection and a division of the Nauvoo Legion was formed in Lehi . Soon Brigham Young was able to make a peace treaty with Chief Walker .
