Ida was born in Carroll County Georgia in 1881. Her family had moved to Lawrence County Alabama by 1900 when she was 19 years old. She married John Augustus Griggs in 1903. They had ten children, all born in north Alabama. John Samuel was born in 1903, David Bryant b 1905, Ezra Lee b 1907, Maudie Elizabeth, b 1909, Mary Anne "Mollie" b 1910, Robert Toomer b 1913, Sallie Lorene b 1916, Velva Lude b 1919, Thomas Edison b 1921, and Douglas Earnest b 1923. The family moved to Itawamba County Mississippi in the late 1920s and then, after two years to St Francis County Arkansas. They farmed in Arkansas until 1945 when they moved to Memphis, TN to be near one of their children.
