John was born Jan 7, 1881 near Holland, Michigan. He lived in Grand Rapids 45 years. He married Bessie Gallup, who left him 6 months after Lester, their son, was born. John's parents helped raise Lester until he remarried to Jennie Nickolas. They had a son named Donald. John was employed as a cabinetmaker in a local furniture factory before going to work for the board of education. He worked in Grand Rapids public schools 19 years and he was a custodian at the St. Cecilia Auditorium when taken ill. At the age of 69, he died Wednesday morning, July 18, 1951, after a six-week illness. Surviving was his wife, Jennie, two sons, Lester of Grand Rapids, and Donald of Jackson, a brother, Jack, of Lansing, a sister, Mrs. John Blaauw of Cicero, IL, five grandchildren and on great grand daughter, Linda Turner. Doris never got to tell him she was pregnant with his second great-grand daughter, Mary, before he died. The Body was reposed at his residence at 1129 Davis Ave., N.W., Grand Rapids until Saturday noo. Services was held at Trinty Reformed Chruch, July 21, 1951 at 2:00 with Rev. Van Soest officating. Interment was at Greenwood Cemetery, Grand Rapids. Bearers were: C. Dewey, William Kroeze, William Wiers, A. Shooks, M. Bergers, John Vogel. Vocal music was by Gerald Vande Vusse. Cortege included Jack Vande Vusse, John Blaauw, John Voorhees, Robert Turner, Peter Kloosterman, Ted Vande Vusse, John Vande Vusse,James Vande Vusse, Howard, Vande Vusse, Bernie Vande Vusse, and Herbert Mohr
