MRS. J. W. WALLACE DEAD

A friend of the deceased has forwarded us a newspaper clipping, from which we publish the following extracts:

Well on the road to recover, it was believed, with a host of friends awaiting her happy return to Covington, Mrs. Anna Seward Wallace, who suffered a rapid sinking spell Sunday morning at St. Luke’s Hospital in Richmond and died shortly after Dr. Wallace reached her bedside.

Mrs. Wallace went to Richmond June 16, accompanied by Dr. Wallace, and was operated on Tuesday by Dr. Stuart McGuire, the famous Richmond surgeon. She rallied splendidly after the operation and for several days showed marked improvement.

Mrs. Wallace before her marriage to Dr. Wallace, was Miss Anna Seward, a member of the prominent Texas family of this name. She and Dr. Wallace were married in 1893, and first made their home at Warm Springs. In 1898 they moved to Covington where Dr. Wallace established his practice. Their large mansion on Maple avenue became the most hospitable home in Covington and to this gracious hospitality Mrs. Wallace added her tireless efforts in behalf of the poor people of the community. Not only in charity and church work, but in civic improvements, Mrs. Wallace invariably took a leading role and could always be counted on to do far more than her share in every commendable enterprise. She was a member of the Daughters of the Confederacy, the Eastern Star and other organizations, the organizer and only President of the Woman’s Civic League.

Mrs. Wallace is survived by her husband, Dr. John W. Wallace, two children, Miss Laura Wallace and Master John Wallace; her mother, Mrs. Laura Seward, of Houston, Texas, and two brothers, Messrs. Ingram and Oscar Holt, of Texas.

Her daughter, Miss Laura Wallace, was overtaken by a telegram at Atlanta, while on her way to Texas, and immediately began her sad journey back to her home.
