Gene played football for the Buccaneers when the team won the Texas State Championship in 1938. After graduating from Corpus Christi High School in 1939 he attended University of Texas Austin where he met and married the love of his life Mary Wilson Bailey. After WWII he graduated from the University of Texas in 1947 with a degree in pharmacy.
Gene loved family, the outdoors, history, stories of the west by Louis L'amour, appaloosa horses, white face Herefords and Justin cowboy boots. Gene and Mary bought a ranch in Marshall, TX where Gene worked at Fry Hodge Drugstore and was able to be a "week-end rancher". He was a pharmacist for Rexall Drugstores and owned drugstores in Moriarty, NM, Dubois, WY and Ingleside, TX. He was working for White Cross Drugstore, Las Vegas, NV at the time of his death in 1970.
Gene was very proud to have served his country as a Master Sergeant in the Marines in the Pacific Theater during World War II. He survived the battles of Peleliu, Ulithian, New Hebrides, Marshall, Solomon and Admiralty Islands. Gene received a purple heart and one battle star in the battle of Okinawa, April 2, 1945 when his LST 599 was hit by a Japanese kamikaze. He taught us to be proud of America and to respect our flag. He said many died for that flag to keep us free.
He was a loving and devoted husband, father, son and grandfather. His sense of humor always made life fun.
Graveside services were with full military honors were held at Seaside Memorial Park, Corpus Christi, TX
