James J. Dougherty, a long time resident of Doylestown Township, died on Thursday, July 12, 2012 at his home. He was 87.
He was the husband for 62 years of Joyce B. Dougherty.
Born in Pottsville, Pa., he was the son of the late Patrick J. and Ruth Phillips Dougherty.
Jim was a graduate of Lansdale High School and The Wharton School of the University of Pennsylvania.
He first worked for Birds Eye Division of General Foods Corporation, Crosse and Blackwell as general manager of three divisions. Then he worked for Theresa Friedman & Sons in Philadelphia, becoming Chief Executive Officer. Following the company's purchase by R.H.M., Ltd. USA, Jim was promoted to CEO Industrial Group of R.H.M., Ltd. USA. He served in this capacity until his retirement in August of 1990.
Mr. Dougherty was a member of the Board of Directors of R.H.M., Ltd. USA, Northbrook, Ill. from 1986 to 1990; a member of the Board of Directors of International Preserve Association from 1970 to 1990 and Chairman of the Association from 1988 to 1990. Jim also served for 10 years on the Doylestown Hospital Authority Board.
In addition to his wife, Jim is survived by his daughters: Aine Ungar, Bridget Brennecke, and son, James Dougherty Jr. (Rosemary) and daughter-in-law, Diane Dougherty; his grandchildren: Jeremy, Harrison and Cole Ungar, Tierney and Rowen Brennecke and Colleen and James Dougherty, as well as his great-granddaughter, Molly Dougherty.
He was preceded in death by a son, Patrick Dougherty.
Relatives and friends are invited to Jim's funeral Mass 11 a.m. Tuesday, July 17, 2012 at Our Lady of Mount Carmel Catholic Church, 235 East State Street, Doylestown.
There will be a visitation Monday evening from 6 to 8 p.m. July 16 at Reed and Steinbach Funeral Home, 2335 Lower State Road, Doylestown. Interment will follow Mass in Doylestown Cemetery, Doylestown.
