Francis Eric Evers, lifelong Auburn resident and endurance athlete, passed peacefully on July 10, 2012, from complications of ALS (Amyotrophic Lateral Sclerosis), also known as Lou Gehrig's disease.
The son of Francis and Marion Evers, Eric was born in Auburn on July 12, 1949. In addition to his wife Ruby, he is survived by eight of his nine sisters, one brother, and their families. Eric began his life of service after his graduation from Placer High School, when he served in the U.S. Army from 1970-72, including a tour of duty in Vietnam.
When he returned home after Vietnam, he married the love of his life, Ruby Duvall, in 1973. Although they never had children of their own, Eric took great pride in watching his twenty three nieces and nephews grow up and enjoyed working with the children at Rock Creek Elementary School, where he served as custodian for 21 years. He considered the staff and children there as part of his extended family and felt honored by their strong support during his illness.
Together, Eric and Ruby explored the wonders of California from the ocean beaches and the redwoods to the shores of Lake Tahoe. Eric was called to the wilderness, and his energy knew no bounds as he became a disciplined and competitive long-distance runner. He tackled the Western States 100-Mile Race and finished it in under 24 hours three times. Eric also dedicated time as a volunteer to help others complete this ultra-marathon. Running with a backpack was his other favorite sport, and he "fast-packed" many high Sierra trails, including the 168-mile Tahoe Rim Trail in just eight days in 2009.
At Eric's request there will be no services, but a memory book is being compiled, and friends are urged to send their stories and photos of times with Eric to P.O.
