Author, Poet. Best remembered for his short story "In Dreams Begin Responsibilities" which was published in the Partisan Review in 1937. A year later this story, along with a few others, was published in a book with the same title. The book was a great success making him a well-known figure in New York intellectual circles. Publisher T.S. Eliot as well as fellow poets William Carlos Williams and Erza Pound praised his work and considered him to be one of the most gifted and promising young writers of his time. Other books he wrote include "Shenandoah and Other Verse Plays", "Genesis: Book One", "The World Is a Wedding", "Vaudeville for a Princess and Other Poems", and "Successful Love and Other Stories". In 1959, his book "Summer Knowledge: New and Selected Poems" earned him the Bollingen Prize, making him the youngest-ever recipient of this prestigious award. As his health began to decline from repeated alcohol abuse, his success began to fade. He became a recluse and spent his last years shut away from society. He passed away as a result of a heart attack at the age of 52.
