William Z. Spikes' "Application For Headstone" to the War Department indicates that he died October 31, 1917. The stone was ordered by and shipped to L. M. Spikes in Winnfield, Louisiana on October 15, 1931. This was his half-brother, Levi Marion Spikes # 39782998, for whom William named a son.

On July 18, 1922, his widow Susie Spikes (his second wife) filed an application for a Widow's Pension (#1192315), indicating that her late husband William Spikes served in "12 La. Reg. (Winfield Rfls.)." There was no middle initial entered on the application.

Per inscription on newer stone (which is no question incorrect about his death), his sister was Eliza Spikes Holloway, # 84072670, also buried in Mars Cemetery. The stone may have an incorrect date of birth as well.

Believed to have actually been William M. Spikes, son of Levi Spikes and Charity Elizabeth Briggs, and mixed up with William Spikes # 192737549 who was born in Arkansas. The obituary shown was actually for this William Spikes, which indicates that he died at the home of his daughter-in-law, Mrs. M. L. Spikes. His only surviving daughter mentioned in the obituary was Ella Jane Spikes LaCour.

I have no explanation for why his military records, and thus his headstone, have the middle initial Z.
