Mark B. Heffernan was born in Warren, Ohio and moved to Akron with his parents when he was 6 months old. He attended Akron Central High School and studied criminal law at Akron Law School. From 1930 until 1937 he worked for O'Neil's. He joined the Akron Police Department on 03/16/1937 and retired on 03/04/1963. In March of 1963 Mr. Heffernan joined the investigative staff of the Summit County Coroner's Office. In September of 1964 Mr. Heffernan left the Coroner's Office to become Chief of Detectives for the Summit County Sheriff's Office. In 1968 Captain Heffernan became Chief of the Intelligence Unit for the Summit County Sheriff.

In 1960 Captain Heffernan was in charge of local security for John F. Kennedy, who was in Akron campaigning for the presidency. Captain Heffernan stayed all night in the hotel room with John Kennedy. The following morning Mr. Kennedy called Captain Heffernan's wife and asked her to attend mass at St. Bernard's with him and Mrs. Kennedy.
Captain Heffernan was past president of the Fraternal Order of Police and a member of the Ancient Order of Hibernians, the Summit County Sheriff's Organization, American Legion and West Side Irish-American Club of Cleveland.
Captain Heffernan died approximately 2 weeks after undergoing heart surgery.
Calling hours were held at the Hummel Funeral Home on December 02 & 03, 1968.
Services were held at 9:30 a.m. on December 04, 1968 at St. John Catholic Church.
