He graduated from Ritzville High School in 1948. Worked at his father's machine shop before joining the Air Force.
John met his first wife Marge while stationed in England. They divorced in 1959. The were the parents of two daughters, Angie Eckhardt Finkelburg and Julie Eckhardt Boruff.
In 1964, he married Ruth M. "Ruthie" Webb. They were the parents of three children: Briana Eckhardt Young, John Eckhardt and Jamie Eckhardt.
He was a master welder and machinist and owned Eckhardt Fabricating in Harrington, WA for many years.
