Art Celaya

FLORENCE - Frank A. "Art" Celaya Jr., 85, a formaer state legislator and longtime educational leader in the community and state, died peacefully on July 8, 2012, surrounded by his family.

Visitation will begin at 6 p.m. Friday at Assumption Catholic Church, with rosary recited at 7. Funeral Mass will be celebrated there at 9 a.m. Saturday by the Rev. Rudy Rosales. Burial will be in Florence Cemetery.

Mr. Celaya was a Florence native, born on Dec. 3, 1926, the eldest of 11 Children of Arturo and Consuelo Celaya. A lifelong resident of Florence, he graduated from Florence Union High School in 1945 before serving honorably in the Army in Panama. He then attended Phoenix College and transferred to the University of Arizona, where he earned bachelor's and master's degrees in education. He later attended Northern Arizona University during summers to continue his education. He began teaching social studies at Florence Junior High School in 1952 and continued with the district until retiring as its superintendent in 1988. During a 36-year career he also was a guidance counselor, football and baseball varsity coach, athletic director and principal.

He served two terms in the state House, where he worked to improve education and public welfare. He later was a longtime member of the Central Arizona Valley Institute of Technology board, and also served as its president. His professional and civic associations include: Arizona and National Educaton Associations, National Association of Secondary School Principals. Arizona and American Association of School Administrators, Phi Delta Kappa, Rotary, Arizona Interscholastic Association and its Legislative Council and Executive and Coordination committees, Class B athletic conference president, Florence TRIAD vice chariman, town Planning and Zoning Commission, Pinal School Superintendents Association president, Arizona School Administrators Executive Board and Membership and Policy committees, Arizona School Boards Association Legislative Committee and Phoenix College Students Hall of Fame.

He made many friends and touched the lives of countless students and parents. He was a tireless advocate for those who sought to improve their lives through educationa and hard work.

Survivors include two daughters, Pauline Caldwell and Rita Davis; a son, Frank Celaya III; two sisters, Flora Montano and Carmella Anchondo; five brothers, Alfred, Pete, Louie, Tony and Tom; six grandchildren; and four great-grandchildren. He was preceded in death by his wife, Connie; a sister, Angie; two brothers, David and Eddie; and a grandson Jonathan Celaya.

Memorial contributions may be made to the Art and Connie Scholarship Fund for granduating high school seniors, 480-430-3446.
