Emerson, James Alfred (1865-1922) — also known as James A. Emerson — of Warrensburg, Warren County, N.Y. Born in Warrensburg, Warren County, N.Y., April 25, 1865. Son of Albert Emerson. Republican. Lumber business; clothing manufacturer; steamboat business; hotel owner; banker; member of New York state senate, 1907-18 (32nd District 1907-08, 33rd District 1909-18); as an opponent of alcohol prohibition in 1918, he was called "wringing wet" (in contrast to prohibition advocates, who were "desert dry"). Became ill, from heart disease and gastritis, while on board the steamship Porto Rico, and died soon after, in Long Island Hospital, Brooklyn, Kings County, N.Y., January 31, 1922 (age 56 years, 281 days). Interment at Warrensburg Cemetery, Warrensburg, N.Y.
