Carl was in the United States Army Air Corps in World War II. He earned four oak leaf clusters for his service. He had a twin brother Bernard who became missing in action (MIA) after his plane the Stric-Nine went down. Later in life, Carl enjoyed barbecues at his place in West Alton. Carl died during the famous Flood of 1993 that caused the Mississippi and Missouri rivers to swell beyond their banks. He had an apparent heart attack while getting out of his boat to get to his house.
