From a memoir by a granddaughter, "That spring (of 1870) was a testing time. At one point Wade (Mary Cothran's father) notes in his diary that all the children were sick and he mentions measles as the diagnosis. Wade notes Sunday, April 3, 'Sent for Dr. P. this morning to see Mary. She remained sick all day.' The next entry, painstakingly and skillfully printed is taken directly from his diary: 'The Lord gave and the Lord hath taken away...Blessed be the name of the LORD.'"
