The Sixth Bishop of the Diocese of Valencia, holding the latter office between 1312 and 1348, when he fell victim to the plague which struck Valencia and various other European cities from Asia, Bishop Raimundo Gastó, who is also referred to as Ramón or Raiumndo de Gastón was initially buried in the Capilla de San Miguel de la Seo inside the Cathedral of Valencia, demolished in the eighteenth century to make way to the present Capilla de San José. In 2003, restoration works at the named chapel led to the discovery of his three ton sarcophagus, still preserved in perfect conditions. The sarcophagus has been since transferred to the Capilla de la Virgen del Pilar inside the same Cathedral.
