Edmund Myers Wellford meets death at Gloucester Point.
Caught in a landslide yesterday on the banks of the York River in Gloucester Point, Edmound Myers Wellford, 13, son of Mr. and Mrs. J. McDonald Wellford, 409 West Franklin St. was killed instantly. Some five of six feet below the top of the sloping clay bank, young Wellford had been digging when the earth above gave way and covered his body, with the exception of his feet. It was learned after the body was brought back to Richmond that his neck had been broken. Young Wellford had accompanied Dr. and Mrs. Robert C. Bryan to Gloucester Point for a week-end trip. leaving Richmond Sat. morning. Others in the party included the deceased's brother, MeDonald, Robert and Jack Bryan, Mac Parrish and Fred Scott Campbell. The accident occurred when he wandered away from the remainder of the party who were tonging oysters from a pier nearby. On one saw the accident, and it was stated that he had probably not been seen for 15 or 20 minutes before Dr. bryan discovered his feet sticking from the side of the bank. The body was quickly removed from its emplaned position and artificial respiration was attempted by Dr. Bryan and Dr. J. B. Smith, of Haynes Store. He was a grandson of Messrs A. N. and W. H. Wellford of Sabine Hall.
