Helen McGuire Imboden Trout was born on May 5th, 1877 in Richmond, Virginia. She was the daughter of General John Imboden and Annie Harper Lockett Imboden. Helen’s birth was a difficult one and aided by one of the most famous doctors in all of Virginia: Dr. Hunter Holmes McGuire, who was the founder of the Medical College of Virginia and Stonewall Jackson’s personal physician. Helen’s middle name is as tribute to this noble medical pioneer.

Helen was educated at Miss Daniel’s School for girls in Richmond and the Stonewall Institute for Women in Abingdon. Helen studied to be a vocalist at Agethe of Berlin, Bruno Huhn, Frank Hemstreet, Carl Dufft of New York City. Her recital debut was January 4th, 1912 at Mme. Maude Powell’s in Richmond. Helen’s career as a soprano vocalist made her a minor opera star. She performed at many girls schools, colleges, music clubs, and orchestra societies. In 1916, Helen performed at Carnegie Hall and the Criterion Lyceum.

Miss Imboden married John Trout of Roanoke, Virginia. They lived on Walnut Avenue. Mr. Trout was a prominent banker, real estate broker, and insurance broker who made his mark as a public servant to the City of Roanoke. Helen died on December 27th, 1951 in Roanoke from heart disease. Her father was the famous Confederate Cavalry General John Imboden. General Imboden is credited for opening Southwest Virginia to the expansion of railroads, lumber, and coal mining in Southwest Virginia and is the father of the town of Independence, Virginia. Helen’s mother was Annie Harper Lockett of Mecklenburg County Virginia. Her family owned the Lombardy Grove Plantation. Her brothers Philip and John Kennon served in General Lee’s army during the war. Her sisters include Myrta Lockett Avary, author of “Dixie After The War” and a pioneer in southern women’s literature.
