Cooperstown Farmer Drowns in Gravel Pit At Rosecrans Alfred Rasmussen Takes Wrong Road (photo)(More pictures on page 9)
Alfred Rasmussen, 33, Cooperstown farmer, drowned late Saturday night in a gravel pit north of Rosecrans, as he was driving home from Maribel.

Coroner Theodore Teitgen said Rasmussen apparently mistook the entrance to the gravel pit for the driveway of his home. He lived on the farm of his uncle, Matt Sladky, which he leased.

The body was found by Sheriff Arthur Trutschell and his deputy, James Wondresh, shortly after noon Sunday. It was about 25 feet from the partially submerged pickup truck that Rasmussen was driving home. The coroner announced there would be no inquest.

First news of the tragedy came in a call Sunday morning to the sheriff's office from Anton Rott, Rosecrans tavernkeeper, who reported that in driving past the gravel pit of the Maribel Gravel company, he noticed the truck in the water. Rott said that a checkup disclosed that Rasmussen was not at home.

Drag For Body
When the sheriff reached the scene, he secured a boat and with his deputy started dragging operations. In less than an hour, the body of Rasmussen was found in about 30 feet of water. The sheriff said the truck evidently turned over as Rasmussen drove down the incline to the edge of the water and the driver was thrown clear of the cab. The truck landed right side up in the water.

County Traffic Officer William Ludwig, who also answered the call, said August Mathias of Rt. 1, Maribel, was probably the last person with Rasmussen. Mathias told the officer he and the dead man were together during Saturday at Denmark and later went to the Elm tavern in Cooperstown. Early Saturday evening Mathias said he and Rasmussen went on to Maribel where they parted, Mathias going to his farm home afoot.

Funeral Wednesday
Funeral services will be held 10 a.m. Wednesday at the St. Mary's church, Tisch Mills, with burial in the adjoining cemetery. The body may be viewed after Tuesday noon at the home of Matt Sladky, route 1, Maribel, an uncle, where the rosary will be recited at 8 p.m. Tuesday.
