Alvin E. Otto Sr., age 75, of Ashland and formerly of Mellen, passed away with loving family by his side on Monday, May 16, 2016, at St. Luke's Hospital in Duluth, Minn. He was born Dec. 16, 1940, in Mellen, the son of John and Margaret (Delvelski) Otto.
Alvin graduated in 1959 from Mellen High School and married Sandra Hanson on Aug. 4, 1961, in Bessemer, Mich. The couple resided in Mellen and later in Milwaukee where Alvin worked for the Perfex Company for seven years. They moved back to Mellen and eventually moved to Ashland where Alvin worked for 30 years for the Ashland School District until his retirement in 2002.
Alvin was a member of the Most Holy Rosary Catholic Church of Mellen. He was an outdoorsman throughout his life and hunting, fishing and camping were yearly activities for Al and his family. He played in both the Ashland Pool and Dart Leagues for many years and he enjoyed playing poker, cribbage, skip-bo and free cell on his computer. He enjoyed getting together with family and friends but loved to get away for long quiet car rides with his wife.
He is survived by his wife of 54 years, Sandy Otto; seven children, Randy Hanson, Julie Ann Cadotte, Brenda (John) Dietrich, Alvin Otto Jr., Michelle (Greg) Lee, Robert Otto and Kimberley Otto; 25 grandchildren and 39 great-grandchildren; a sister, Margaret (Bill) Dahl; brother, Dan (Dorothy) Otto; and numerous nieces, nephews and other relatives.
He was preceded in death by his parents and three brothers, George, Sylvester and John Jr.
A memorial mass will be held at the Most Holy Rosary Catholic Church in Mellen on Friday, May 20 at 11 a.m. Visitation will be held one hour prior to the service at the church.
Inurnment will be held at the Clam Lake Cemetery at 2 p.m., Friday, May 20 after the reception at the church.
