John Riley was a patrolman with the Wilmington, Delaware Police Department having been sworn in on 25 April 1915. Prior to this, he had been a soldier in the U.S. Army. Patrolman Riley had been given permission to go off duty and care for his spouse who was taken ill with the Spanish Flu. This was agreed to as no nurse could be found due to the epidemic. As a result of his care taking, Patrolman Riley contracted the Spanish Flu himself and passed away. His spouse survived.
