George Richard Dixon, 93, of Alfred, passed away on April 30, 2009, in Biddeford.

George was born the fourth of six children on March 12, 1916, in Chelsea, Massachusetts, to George B. Dixon and Mary E. (Donavan) Dixon.

The family moved to Saugus, Massachusetts, where he graduated from Saugus High School.

He met and married Marjorie L. Torr in 1941. They were inseparable for 62 years until her passing in 2003.

George enlisted in the Army in December, 1942, and served with distinction in the Ordnance Corps in the Rhineland, Ardennes and Central European Campaigns until December, 1945, earning the rank of Technical Sergeant 4th Class. He was very active in Veterans Associations, especially the American Legion and American Veterans of World War II.

After the war, the Dixons, now grown to include daughter Geraldine, moved to Lynn, Massachusetts.

George joined the United Shoe Machinery Company and worked there until his retirement.

In addition to veterans' activities, he enjoyed golfing and camping with friends and family.

After retirement, George moved to Alfred, where he remained for 31 years, acquiring a new community of friends through his engaging personality, generosity, and relentless sense of humor. Those friends have returned the favor in full measure in recent years, and George took great comfort in knowing that, among them, he would never be alone.

George is survived by his sister, Barbara Canfield, of Saugus; brother, Philip Dixon, of Chelsea, Massachusetts; daughter, Geraldine Cleaveland, and son-in-law, Charles Cleaveland, of Barrington, New Hampshire; grandchildren, Lisa Champa, of Melrose, Massachusetts, Denise Buckley, of Winthrop, Massachusetts, Scott Champa, of Lynn, Massachusetts, Christopher Cleaveland, of Plainfield, Connecticut, and Kimberlee Cleaveland Seah, of Windham, New Hampshire; 12 great-grandchildren; 2 great-great-grandchildren; and a host of nieces, nephews and friends.

George was predeceased by his beloved wife, Marjorie; sister, Florence Popp; brothers, Edward and Harold Dixon; and his treasured companion in recent years, Jake the Cat.

A graveside service will be held at Pine Grove Cemetery in Lynn, Massachusetts, on Friday, May 29, at 1 pm. A gathering of family and friends will follow.

A Celebration of Life for neighbors and friends will be held in the Community Center at Keywood Manor in Alfred on June 14, from 11-1 p.m.

The family requests that donations in lieu of flowers be made to the American Heart Association in his name. Published in Fosters from May 21 to May 22, 2009
