Member of Original Donner Party Dies
Private funeral services for Mrs. Catherine Maria Tilden Brown, of the original members of the Donner party and mother of Douglas Tilden, world renowned sculptor, were conducted Monday at the home of her daughter, Mrs. Helen Townshend, in Lafayette.
Mrs. Brown passed away Friday at her daughter's home at the age of 93 years.
Mrs. Brown crossed the plains with the original Donner party. When the party separated she was with the group which made the trip across the mountains in safety, settling at Santa Cruz.
She was the daughter of the late Adna Hecox, one of the last alcaldes of Santa Cruz when California was still a Spanish possession. For many years he kept the lighthouse at Santa Cruz and after his death his daughter, Laura Hecox, operated it.
Mrs. Brown lived for many years in San Francisco and in Berkeley. She was one of the first members of the California Club of San Francisco. Interested in civic affairs, Mrs. Brown was one of the most active workers in the suffrage movement in California, a drawing of one of her sculptures being used on post cards in the suffrage campaign.
After rearing seven children, and after son had become world famous for his sculptures, Mrs. Brown began the study of drawing and sculpture and became quite distinguished for her work. She was a woman of unusual intelligence and ability and was well known throughout the State. During the last years of her life she made her home in Lafayette with her daughter.
Mrs. Brown is survived by one daughter and three sons. They are Mrs. Helen Townshend of Lafayette, Douglas Tilden of Berkeley, Aaron Hamer Brown of Lafayette and Albert Brown of Patterson.
Douglas Tilden is the artist who designed the football statue on the Univeristy Campus, the Mechanic's Fountain in San Francisco and the statue on the grounds of the California School for the Deaf and Blind.
