George enlisted for Civil War army service, August 21, 1863, in the 6th Regiment, Ohio Volunteer Cavalry, for a term of 3 years. He was commissioned 2nd Lieutenant in Company F, on the same date. He died February 28, 1864 from a brain injury due to a fall from a horse, at the 300-bed United States General Army Hospital at Cleveland, Ohio.
The Hospital was actually located south of the City of Cleveland in Brooklyn Township, across the street from Camp Cleveland in what was known as University Heights, not to be confused with the present eastern suburb of the same name. Brooklyn Township was eventually annexed to the City of Cleveland after the Civil War. University Heights is today known as the East Tremont neighborhood. All of the lumber and equipage at the Hospital and Camp Cleveland was sold at public auction so that no remnants of those entities remained. The street patterns do remain the same, however, although some of the names have been changed. In the Hospital record his name is spelled "Milliken."
