Coleman death ruled as accidental drowning

Staff Writer Cordele Dispatch

Franklin, Ga. — Accidental drowning has been ruled as the cause of the swimming pool death this past weekend of a 39-year-old Sumter County man with Wilcox County family ties.

Heard County coroner Kathie Buchanan said Ryan Coleman was visiting at the home of a female friend and co-worker when the accident was reported shortly after 2:30 a.m. Sunday.

Buchanan said the victim's friend told her that when she walked away from the pool area to write in her journal Coleman was lying on a float. As she wrote in her journal, she said she continued to hear him splashing in the water.

When the splashing stopped, the friend returned to the edge of the pool and saw Coleman sitting at the bottom of the pool in about eight feet of water.

She said she then dived into the pool, managed to partially pull him from the water and began performing CPR on him. At intervals she said she screamed for help, hoping neighbors might hear and rush to assist her.

When no response was forthcoming, she momentarily left Coleman and ran to make a 911 call. Within two minutes, an officer from the Franklin Police Department made it on the scene, removed Coleman from the water and also performed CPR until an EMS unit arrived another two minutes or so later.

Buchanan said that when about 30 total minutes of effort to revive Coleman failed, he was pronounced dead at the scene. The body was sent to the State Crime Lab in Atlanta for an autopsy. Employees there informed Buchanan of their accident drowning ruling Tuesday afternoon.
