Elmer Dewein was a horseshoer, ie Blacksmith, in Galesburg, Illinois. He married Rachel May Simons October 1, 1884 in Burlington, Iowa. Rachel was the daughter of John N. and Indiana M. (Scott) Simons. They had five known children were: Myrtle L. DeWein Lawman, William Elmer DeWein, Marguerette J. DeWein Paridon, Rachel [James] DeWein Brannon, and Edith K. DeWein.

He learned the horseshoeing trade in Burlington, Iowa and worked there until 1889 when he then moved to Galesburg, Illinois. He was a partner of D. F. Nolan in 1895 and had an extensive business at 15 West Main Street in Galesburg. Mr. Dewein was a member of the Baptist church, Knights of Pythias, Modern Woodmen of America, and Court of Honor.
