Lucia Fishburne Cogswell Heins, widow of Henry Carl Heins, Jr., M.D., M.P.H., of Charleston, SC, died July 8, 2012.

She was born November 11, 1922 in Charleston, SC.

A member of the Huguenot Church of Charleston, Mrs. Heins graduated from Memminger High School in 1939 and from the College of Charleston in 1943. She graduated as a Medical Lab Technician from the Medical College.

She worked for a short time at the Medical College before working in Wilmington, NC and in St. Louis, MO.

Mrs. Heins was a member of the Huguenot Society of SC for 46 years and served on its Board, as well as serving as the Editor of Transactions of the Huguenot Society of SC. She was Superintendant of the Ladies Benevolent Society for 20 years, President of the SC Medical Association Auxiliary, a licensed Charleston Guide, a member of the National Society of Colonial Dames of America-South Carolina, a member of the Preservation Society of Charleston and of the DAR. In 2004, she received a Certificate of Appreciation from The Society of First Families of SC, 1670-1700, and she received the Esprit Huguenot Award from the Huguenot Society of SC.

Mrs. Heins is survived by two daughters: Susan Heins McLendon, wife of Baxter McLendon, III, M.D. and Barbara Heins Simmons, wife of Edward M. Simmons, Jr.; seven grandchildren: Lucia Cogswell McLendon, M.D., Hedda Morrall McLendon (Alison), Cordes McLendon Marshall (Davis), Lanier Simmons Prescott (Tyler), Chesnee Simmons Klein (Matthew), Walker Simmons Jordan (Hunter), Edward M. Simmons, III and six great-grandchildren, Tyler M. Prescott, Lucia T. Prescott, Susanna G. Prescott, Henry E. Prescott, Tindall Claire Jordan, and Lydia G. Prescott. She is also survived by one sister, Claudia Cogswell Bolduc of California.

She is predeceased by one son, Henry Carl Heins, III, and one grandchild, Susanna Heins Simmons.

Relatives and friends are invited to attend her funeral service in The Chapel at Bishop Gadsden, July 11, 2012 at 2:00 p.m. Burial will be in the (French) Huguenot Churchyard.
