Dirk Vrolijk, 80, passed away July 8, 2012, at Oak Lea Nursing Home.

Mr. Vrolijk was born Feb. 15, 1932, in Leiden, Netherlands, and was the son of the late Johannes and Geerjte Biesheuvel Vrolijk. He came to America as a trainee in 1953-1954 with Mennonite Central Committee and returned to the Netherlands for 1½ years and came back to America as an immigrant in January 1957.

On July 5, 1958, he married the former Louise Katherine Nice in Denbigh, Va., and they were members of the Warwick River Mennonite Church. Louise preceded him in death in 1967. They had three children, Judith Diane Hiett (husband, Richard), Joyce Marie Martin (husband, Elmer) and Linwood Dirk Vrolijk (wife, Radella).

On June 8, 1968, he married the former Mary Lou Miller, who survives. They made their home in Rockingham County, where he owned and operated a poultry farm. They were members of Mount Clinton Mennonite Church. They had two children, Jeanette Renee Foster (husband, Brent) and Dirk Alan Vrolijk, who died in November 1973 from a farm accident.

Mr. Vrolijk is also survived by 12 grandchildren and two stepgrandchildren, Melissa, Matthew and Michelle Hiett, Brendan, Brett and Audrey Martin, Drew, Alec, Chad and Bryse Vrolijk, Eston, Hanna, Glen and Emma Foster.

In addition to his first wife and son, he was preceded in death by a sister, Aagje Van de Ruit; a brother, Johannes (Joop) Vrolijk; and a granddaughter, Stephanie Martin.

The Rev. Lee Martin will conduct a funeral service on Friday, July 13, 2012, at the Lindale Mennonite Church at 10:30 a.m. with burial to follow in the Lindale Cemetery.

The family will receive friends Thursday from 6 p.m. until 8 p.m. at the McMullen Funeral Home.
