Etta Zuber Falconer was born of love and hope to Walter Alexander Zuber and Zadie Montgomery Zuber in Tupelo, Mississippi. She was baptized at the Spring Hill Baptist Church and was the youngest of the two Zuber sisters.
In 1953, at age 19, Etta graduated from Fisk University in Nashville, TN with a B. S. degree in mathematics and pledged AKA. After receiving her M. S. degree in mathematics from the University of Wisconsin in 1954, she returned to Mississippi to teach at Okolona Junior College. At Okolona, she met her husband Dolan Falconer whom she married in 1955.
In 1963, the family moved to Chattanooga, TN where she taught at Howard High School for two years before moving to Atlanta to take a teaching position in the mathematics department at Spelman College. During her tenure at Spelman, she received her Ph. D. degree in mathematics from Emory University (1969) and an M. S. degree in Computer Science from Atlanta University(1982).
While at Spelman, Etta lead development of one of the most productive science programs at a liberal arts college in the United States. She served as Chair of the Mathematics Department, Chair of the Division of Natural Sciences, Associate Provost for Science Programs and Policy, Interim Provost, Fuller E. Callaway Professor of Mathematics, Senior Advisor to the President and Principal Investigator for the Model Institutions for Excellence Program (MIE). She founded the Health Careers Society Summer Science Program, Women in Science and Engineering Program (funded by NASA) and was the founding president of Phi Beta Kappa Chapter on Spelman's campus. She was instrumental in creating the new Albro-Falconer-Manley Science Center.
In recognition of Etta's passionate dedication and long standing commitment as a mentor, role model, administrator and educator along with her effort to increase the number of African American women pursuing careers in mathematics and sciences, she received the AAAS Mentor Award for Lifetime Achievement. In May 2002, Etta was named Professor Emerita and retired from her beloved Spelman after 37 years of faithful service. Her legacy in education of African American women in science is unparalleled and the impact of her commitment will continue to benefit us forever.
