Phoebe was the eldest of nine children of Joseph Smith Holmes (1807-1886) and his first wife Minerva (Carlisle) Holmes (1812-1856), who were married 3 Mar 1832 in Middletown Point, Monmouth Co., NJ.
She married 19 Mar 1856 in Darien, Fairfield Co., CT, Gabriel McCauley Lea (1825-1908), son of Gabriel Burley Lea (1783-1871) and Mary Ann (McCauley) Lea (1797-1854) of Caswell and Alamance Counties, NC.
Her youngest full sibling (her four half-siblings were younger still) was Nathaniel Weed Holmes (1850-1931). He never married, lived at Grand Ledge, Michigan, and wrote helpfully to Phoebe's son Edwin Holmes Lea and daughter Minerva Lea Crane concerning Holmes family history.
