Captain Shreve was a riverboat captain who helped to supply the forces of Andrew Jackson at New Orleans in the War of 1812. He invented the steam-powered snag boat for the removal of debris hindering navigation. Shreve worked for the U.S. Corps of Engineers for many years & helped to clear the Red River. He founded a camp that eventually became the city of Shreveport, Louisiana. His parents were Col. Israel Shreve (1739-1799) and Mary Cokely Shreve(1749-?).
