John York was born 15 Jan 1796 in Tennessee. He married Nancy Steward on 02 Jun 1816, and their first child, Andrew Jackson York, was born the following year on 08 Apr 1817.

The little family then moved to Alabama, where the following children were born:
Jane York, 10 Jan 1819
Wesley C. York, 12 Feb 1821
Uriah F. York, 19 Apr 1823
William Carroll York, 10 Oct 1825
John S. York, 24 Nov 1827
Martha Ann York, 21 Feb 1830
Mary Ann or Marian Francis York, 11 Jun 1832
Felix W. York, 23 Jan 1834
Charles Martin York, 13 Sep 1837

Before 1840, John, Nancy, and their younger children moved to Jackson County, Arkansas. It is not known just when either John or Nancy died or where they are buried, but both died after 1850 and before 1860.

John's birth date, Nancy's maiden name, their marriage date, and the names and birth dates of their children come from pre-1936 correspondence between two of their grandchildren, James William York, 1858-1936, son of Felix W. York, and a daughter of Martha Ann York Gibson.

Please note: This John York was not the son of Tom York and Frances Mitchell. People have taken bits and pieces of very different John Yorks to invent the ancestor they wanted. Some have used this John York's birth date and more, when their John Yorks were completely different people. This has led to considerable confusion among people who only copy from other trees, rather than doing actual research. To put it bluntly, that is identity theft. Your ancestors don't want you stealing someone else's information; they want you to find THEIR information. Please stop!

Furthermore, John Gratison York is not, never was, and never will be a son of this John York and his wife, Nancy Steward. They never lived in the same place, or even in the same state at the same time. He had his own family. Please stop trying to force people into families they don't belong to. They deserve to have their OWN families found.
