Ryan John Arata, 81, of Surfside Beach, SC on Friday, Dec. 9, 2011 at his residence after an extended illness with ALS.
Mr. Arata was born July 20, 1930, in Hallowell, ME to the late John P. and Elizabeth Violette Arata. Following his graduation from Hollowell High School in 1948 he volunteered for the U.S. Navy where served as a Navy Corpsman at Bethesda Naval Hospital before being attached with the First Marine Division in the Korean Conflict. He received a Master of Commercial Science degree from Benjamin Franklin University in Washington, DC in 1955.
He was a Certified Public Accountant and worked many years in the Washington, DC area. During his retirement he was an active member of the VFW Post in Murrells Inlet, SC where he served one term as the post Commander. He was also a member of the ALS support group at Socastee United Methodist Church, Socastee, S.C.
He was preceded in death by his sister Violette Bernier. Survivors include a son Tom(Zuzana) Arata; two daughters, Kathy(Tod) Crean, Sharon(Todd) Roberson; mother of his children, Mary Z. Arata; stepmother, Avis Arata Millett; sister, Joyce(Bill) Perry; brother, Carl(Shirley) Arata; five grandchildren; eight great-grandchildren; and several nieces and nephews.
