GEN. PILCHER DEAD
Major and Brigade Surgeon of Volunteers in the Spanish War.

Savannah, GA -- April 9 - Gen James Evelyn Pilcher of Carlisle, Penn., surgeon, author and lecturer, died at St Joseph's Hospital. Mrs Pilcher was with him.
He was born in Adrian, Michigan, March 18, 1857, son of Rev Elijah Holmes Pilcher. Graduated from Univ of Michigan 1879, then entered Long Island College Hospital in Brooklyn and earned medical degree a few years later and while undergraduate there he was made curator of Anatomical and Surgery Society, and was published in their monthly magazine.
In 1883 he passed Army Examing Board and served as Acting and later as Assistant Surgon of the US Army until 1887 when he became Captain of station on Governors Island. He was sent to Mobile AL then to Tampa FL on the first call for troops in the Spanish-American War.
While maintaining the Regimental Hospital he gained recognition among higher authorities and was made Major and Brigade Surgeon of Volunteers.
While in active service he became an authority on the latest methods of first aid.
He retired in 1900, due to severe illness caused by strain of which he was subjected during the war.
After retirement, he held Chair of Anatomy and Embryology at Dickinson College, and of Economics and Sociology in 1901-1903, as well as Professor of Medical Jurisprudence at Dickinson School of Law.
He was an honorary member of the Phi Beta Kappa and Delta Chi fraternities, and in 1902 was honored by Allegheny College with the degree of L.H.D.
