Mr. Meitzler was born in Germany Sept aa a831 the son of Jacob & Elizabeth (Lowald) Meitzler who spent their entire lives in the Fatherland where the father spent many years as a revenue collector. Until 13 years of age our subject attended the schools of his native land and the crossed the Atlantic to Charleston SC where his brothers and sisters were living and where he made his home until the outbreak of the Civil War. In the meantime he was bound out to learn the machinist's trade and after mastering this he went aboard the steamer "Isabel" as second engineer, and followed the sea until 1857. Returning to Charleston he engaged in clerking> He later opened the Globe Hotel on Queen street, and conducted the same until being called into the war,after the war he moved to Williamsport where he opened another hotel. In 1872 when the local option law was passed he came to Lock Haven and opened The Railroad House. The "Riverside Hotel" is one of the best and most complete hotels in the city, it being supplied with all the modern conveniences. It can accommodate 200 guests, it's cuisine is excellent and the place has become a popular resort with the traveling public.

In 1863 Mr. Meitzler married Miss Eva Herr of Lycoming county , they are affiliated with the Lutheran Church, . In his politics he is a Democrat, opposed to monopolies but has never been an office seeker.The success of his life is due to no inherited fortune or to any happy succession of advantageous circumstances, but to his own sturdy will, steady application tireless industry and sterling integrity.
