Earl Maris Garren, Jr. was born on September 7, 1914, the second of three children of the late Earl Maris and Jessie Ashbaugh Garren.

Though born in Philadelphia, his family moved to Baltimore when he was a child after his father, who had been sent to Baltimore to close a branch office of Seaboard Finance, reported that he believed he could return that office to good health.

On a blind date, Earl met Evelyn Virginia Bowen and told his sister that night that he'd met the girl he would marry. That proved to be the case; after courting for three years they were wed in 1936 and raised a family in the community of Rodgers Forge. Their children are (the late) Earl M. Garren, III, William R. Garren, and Linda G. Garren. Earl and Evelyn's love endured for the rest of their lives.

Earl graduated from Baltimore Polytechnic Institute, an engineering high school, and though his career turned out to be in real estate, he never lost his interest in engineering, particularly in regard to mechanical things. Ships and airplanes were a special interest. He proudly served in the U.S. Navy during WWII, was stationed in Lakehurst, New Jersey, and Patuxent River, Maryland, and remained a strong patriot throughout his life.

Most of Earl's spare time was devoted to family: Preparing tax returns for elderly members, mowing their lawns, and chauffeuring them to doctors' appointments. Supporting his wife in her volunteer work at GBMC hospital, girl scout leader responsibilities, and flower-garden projects in the back yard. Keeping his three children on track and setting an excellent example for them. Other time was devoted to his church: He was a deacon at Saters Baptist Church where he led or helped on any projects of the moment, from repairing the church roof to shoveling the walk on snowy Sunday mornings.

Earl was a cheerful and considerate individual of great integrity who was loved by his family and respected by all who knew him.
