Private
Company H
27th Iowa Infantry
Union Army
CIVIL WAR

Enlisted from Independence, IA, on 15 Aug 1862. He was discharged on 23 Nov 1863 for the purpose of accepting a commission in the US Colored Heavy Artillery.

2nd Lieutenant
Company K
3rd US Colored Heavy Artillery
Union Army
CIVIL WAR

He was appointed to 2nd Lieutenant on 27 May 1863, but apparently, the appointment was not effective until much later in the year. In Oct 1863, he wrote a letter to his gaining commander explaining that he became severely ill with typhoid pneumonia while home on furlough and would be delayed.

Physically, it appears that he never truly recovered, as his health was very poor for the remainder of his military service; and, it negatively affected his ability to perform his duties as an officer. In the end, Lt Gaylord faced a “Military Board” of other officers, who were charged with evaluating his effectiveness as an officer and his future in the Army. The board recommended that Lt Gaylord leave the Army and their recommendation was accepted by higher command. He was ultimately discharged on 15 Nov 1864.

VETERAN
At the Home Failed to Answer Call
Died in His Bed

George G. Gaylord, an inmate of the home, was found dead in his bed in his cottage about 4:30 Friday afternoon. He had been in poor health for some time suffering from a complication of diseases and usually lay for a short time before each meal. When his comrades called him late in the afternoon, he did not answer, and they discovered that he was dead. Coroner McClelland was called to view the remains. It is supposed death resulted from uremic poisoning, due to kidney trouble.

Gaylord was about 72 years of age. His home was near Birmingham, this county, but he had no relatives here. Some distant relatives lived near Cleveland.
