Ella V. (Lewis) Adams was a daughter of Green B. Lewis & Mary Elizabeth ("Lizzy") Rushing. Her paternal grandfather was Green Lewis who was a Justice of the Peace in Stewart Co, GA. Ella's maternal grandparents were Rev. John Rushing and Sarah (Ward) Rushing. Ella was born in or near Stewart County, Georgia and later moved with her family to Leake County, Miss.

In 1873 or 1874 Ella V. Lewis married James ("Jim") Allen Adams in Leake County, Miss. Jim had previously been married to Mary A. Hooks, Ella's first cousin, who died sometime after their son James (Jimmy) David Adams was born. Mary A. (Hooks) Adams was a daughter of Alexander Hooks & Martha (Rushing) Hooks. So Ella helped Jim raise Jimmy and three more sons were to follow: Marvin, William & Sam Adams. The 1900 federal census indicates that she had three additional children who died at birth or infancy.

Sometime during the early 1890s, Jim, Ella and their children moved to Van Zandt County, Texas along with several other family members from Leake County, Miss. They settled in or near the town of Edgewood where they lived the remainder of their lives.
