James Allen Adams was born in Pitt County, North Carolina to Franklin & Martha Adams. By 1860 Jim Adams was living in Neshoba County, Miss., and on 31 Dec. 1868 he married Mary A. Hooks in Leake County, Miss. Mary was a daughter of Alexander & Martha (Rushing) Hooks.

Jim & Mary had a son named James ("Jimmy") David Adams, born in Dec. 1870. Sometime shortly thereafter Mary died. Within a couple of years Jim married Mary's first cousin, Ella V. Lewis, daughter of Green & Lizzy (Rushing) Lewis. Ella helped raise Jimmy, and had three other sons with Jim.

Around 1890 Jim, Ella and their family moved west to Van Zandt County, Texas, settling near the town of Edgewood. There they lived the rest of their lives.
